In response to The Daily Post’s Daily Prompt Generation XYZ
It is funny that this should be a writing prompt … as I was creating my About Me page I actually identified myself as a “GenX-er with Millennial tendencies.” I grew up in the 70s and 80s. I consider myself a ‘child of the 80s’ because those are the things I can remember…yet there is photographic evidence of me (and some of my siblings) definitely being ‘children of the 70s.’
Bucky Covington’s song A Different World comes to mind whenever I think about growing up in such a different time…a different world.
We played outside. We drank from the hose and ate Fluffer Nutter sandwiches on Wonder bread and got Pop Rocks from the candy store. We got Dorothy Hamill haircuts. Wore moon boots in the winter. Simon and Merlin were our first ‘electronic’ games (I can still hear the sound of the beeps!) We had the Donnie and Marie dolls in the purple outfits. Wanted our own tape recorder so that we could tape songs off the radio. We watched Little House on the Prairie, Dukes of Hazard and The A Team. Our first computer was a Commodore 64 and we played video games on an Atari 2600.

There was something about that time period that seems a little simpler. A little more laid back, and not quite so stressful. This may have had something to do with being a child then…and now I am supposed to be a grown up (which is way over-rated!)…or maybe it really was a little less crazy. There is something to be said for enjoying the little things in life.
Let’s not forget that not all was great back then…polyester suits, disco, the mullet, and track suits just name a few things that we could probably have lived without. But hey, what would we have to look back on and laugh about if we didn’t have these generational bloopers?
