Monday Musings…Gnomes a New Obsession

Ruh rho…I may have just unintentionally created a new gnomes obsession…

Obsessed with GnomesTotally, minding my own business the other day, preoccupied, for probably longer than I realized, on Pinterest…I stumbled over an adorable knitted gnome…that naturally, had me searching Ravelry (where more uncounted moments of my time disappeared) for more cute knitted gnome patterns…which then led me back down the rabbit trail to Pintrest and before I knew what was happening, I had created a secret Gnome board (a secret board…cause maybe a Gnomes obsession is weird?!?) with lots of little adorable gnome pins added. Next thing you know I have opened Amazon up in another browser window and lo and behold, 3 (count them…one, two & three!!) adorable gnomes jumped in my cart and started arriving at my house yesterday!! How does this happen?!?!

Well, when the coast was clear (ie…boyfriend was working and not able to witness the unveiling of the first 2 gnome arrivals)…I unpacked the ‘hammock slumbering gnome’ and the little fellow with his hands behind his back…and…I AM IN LOVE…they are ADORABLE!!!!

I had to do a little research about gnomes…wondering if they had some magical powers over unsuspecting people making them a little ‘gnome crazed’…

Here is what I found according to the New World Encyclopedia…thought, they might be a little more of a creditable source than Wikipedia on such important fact finding missions 🙂2015-07-27 16.49.52

“The depiction of gnomes has changed quite often over the years and remained different in different cultures. Originally many of them were conceived of as ugly, ground dwelling creatures that were less humanoid than the gnomes of today. In fact, they were more akin to small goblins and disfigured faeries, and acted more like animals than human beings. In contrast, modern sources often depict gnomes as diminutive, stout humanoids who wear tall, pointed conical caps and dress in solid colors such as blue, red, or green; in this depiction, the male gnome always has a long white beard. They have the intelligence of a human (are sometimes thought to be wiser), and have human-like personalities.

While their appearances may differ, the older and newer traditions do share a similar belief in gnomes’ capabilities: They are said to move as easily through the earth as humans walk upon it, and the sun’s rays turn them into stone. They are incredibly strong and fast, and said to possess almost supernatural abilities in the manipulation of natural material (although they also are said to fiercely guard against any unnecessary damage to the earth and wildlife).”

I don’t know what happened…but I am not so patiently waiting for my 3rd little guy to show up at my door…and I may (or may not) have a wishlist and cart full of possible other gnomes that are begging to come live at my house. Not to mention, frantically stash diving for just the right yarn to start on my little knitted one as well 🙂

  1. I was so entertained by your post! I say this as I have a friend who despises gnomes. She revealed this when she got me a gnome in a Secret Santa exchange where she drew my name and the gnome is wearing clothes for my favorite NFL team. But she had to wrap him as it was freaking her out. So we found this book for her… I tried to cut and paste the book cover because it’s so funny but it’s not working…. it’s called “How to Survive a Garden Gnome Attack: Defend Yourself When the Lawn Warriors Strike (And They Will)”. I think you should definitely add it to your collection, just in case they turn on you! Great post!!!

    1. Thank you!! You realize finding me books to feed my new found obsession is really not helpful…but funny…and will definitely be checking it out so I can be prepared when the strike 🙂

  2. Umm, gnomes..actually, I think somewhere deep inside I love gnomes too! I would have gnomes if I had a garden. I liked your facebook page so that I can be the first to see what new gnomes mysteriously appear in your world. Also, when I find the button, I will follow your blog! Have a happy week!

    1. I’m actually considering keeping these guys inside…so you could get a gnome even though you don’t have a garden 😉

  3. Ha! So funny. Gnomes are pretty adorable, though. Have you seen Gnomeo and Juliet? You should! You’ll really be obsessed then. Seriously, though, it’s a really cute movie.

  4. Hi,
My blogging 101 site says you liked my Man on Camel squib. Thank you. I could find no way to respond there. So I’ve tracked you down, and I like your gnome experience. We owe thanks to Word Press for Blogging 101. Great experience. Still, way too much remaining to learn. Happy blogging to you.
