Take It From Me

“If you love something, set it free. If it comes back to you, it is yours forever. If it doesn’t, it was never meant to be.”   – Unknown

If you love something set it freeI have heard this little piece of wisdom occasionally in my life, from well meaning individuals, like my mom or a good friend. And although I believe it is meant with good intentions, I can’t say that it has been all that helpful to me. But in my heart, I know that the giver of this well meaning advice just wants to ease the pain they see in me. I have caught myself attempting to use this little nugget of false hope on the rare occasion…but just as the words have left my mouth, I want to reach out and grab those words back, before the person before me hears them, and can say, “Did you really just say that to me? Are you crazy?!” I, too, have said this because I want to believe it is true and I want to erase the hurt in the person’s eyes in front of me. The words sound so pretty, and the sentiment is wonderful, after all, who doesn’t like a happy ending? However, for me anyway, every time I have ever been in one of these situations myself, and some kind soul has attempted to reassure me that this…this is the road that should be taken, and all will be right with my world…in my moment of weakness, and wanting the hurt to go away, I have foolishly “Set It Free”…and not once has the darn thing ever come back to me!  My hope is that someone, somewhere, has received this advice and they have set free whatever it is that they were holding on too tightly to, and that precious item has returned to them forever.
