The Space to Write

Assignment #6 for Writing 101 of Blogging University is to describe your writing space.

Where do you write? Do you prefer blogging on your laptop in a coffee shop? Are you productive in a quiet room, door closed, away from civilization? Today, describe the space where you write. Or, if you donโ€™t have a dedicated place, what is your ideal setting?

Consider these questions to shape your post:

  • What are your writing habits?
  • What equipment or supplies do you use to write?
  • What do you need and want in a physical space?

I am constantly thinking about things while I am driving around from one pet sitting assignment to another and so I have been known to jot down ideas or songs that strike a cord with me while I am driving. But for the most part when I finally get around to writing about those ideas or tidbits of inspiration, it is usually in my room with my laptop.

My Writing Space

My room isn’t really set up with a nice desk and writing space. I usually just sit on my bed with my laptop on my lap as I lean up against some pillows. It isn’t the best set up…but until I can get my butt in gear and reorganize my room so that I can get a small desk set up, til then it will have to do. Occasionally, I have been known to take my laptop out into our entertainment room but the internet doesn’t like to cooperate out there so that is not always ideal.

I’m not sure I have established all that many habits yet in my blogging career. Other than my natural tendency to be anal. I try really hard for my post to be just perfect when I finally hit publish…of course, being human, that doesn’t always happen…but that is my goal. I tend to type and write as I go, but then I will save my draft and preview it to proofread…which ends up being a long tedious task because each time I find something to correct, even if it is just adding a comma, I need to ‘save draft’ and ‘preview’ each. and. every. time!!! I try to stop myself from this occasionally cause I realize I am being weirdly anal…but I can rarely go more than a couple of corrections before I have to ‘save draft’ and ‘preview’ again. It really is comical!!

Mostly, I make time to sit with my computer and just write…whether that be working on some random assignment from a course, such as Writing 101, or in response to something I have read on another blog or social media….so in these situations, it would just be me and my laptop. But if inspiration hits while I am driving around or while walking a dog or waiting at a doctor’s office, the supplies would be a little bit different. In my car, I try to have blank paper available for to jot down random thoughts or inspiration…but more often than not it will end up being scribbled on some scrap of paper that may or may not make it back to my computer…sometimes found months later crumpled up somewhere in my car, covered in dog hair.

If possible I try to also use my cellphone ([easyazon_link identifier=”B00N9CY4V2″ locale=”US” tag=”scrmus06-20″]Samsung Galaxy Note 4[/easyazon_link]), with it’s stylus I can use a note app to jot down ideas or inspiration. Again, these notes may or may not make their way into a blog post because I tend to forget to check back with them…but at least they are not crumpled up and covered in dog hair.

What I need in a physical space would be neatness and organization and cleanliness. I love to waste hours of my time searching Pinterest for ‘organized desk space’ and pray that they will magically appear in my life (so far, they have only made it as far as an “Organization” board.) What I actually have in my physical space would be a lot less organized…but somewhat clean and neat area. But it is quiet and I am able to cuddle with my Oreo, who is never too far away from me. So it does work for me.

However,ย as I continue trying to improve my blog, I am interested to hear what you, dear reader, would like to see more of here at Scribbles & Musings. I have created a poll and would love to have some feedback from you to see what it is that interest you that I may be able to write about.

To all those, who have been following and reading what I have written so far, I thank you for stopping by, and even just spending a moment here with me in my little corner of the interwebs!!

  1. I also hit “save draft” and “preview” endlessly! lol You are not alone in that!
I have a writing space, my own desk that I placed next to a window that overlooks the garden. It’s actually a very pleasant atmosphere. My desk used to be in a corner of the living room, but I decided to rearrange it so I could have more space to myself. I rarely take notes. Usually, If I have a post idea, I obssess over it in my head before I type anything. However, I’m thinking I should take notes. You never know when you might come up with a great idea!

    1. Glad to know there are others that ‘safe draft’ and ‘preview’ endlessly!! Notes are good…but probably work better when you remember you take them ๐Ÿ™‚ Mostly, I just end up sitting down to write.

  2. Save draft, preview, wait … did I save? Better do it again … ALL THE TIME! ๐Ÿ™‚
I’m trying to make my perfect writing area too, which must be clean and organized and comfortable also. Right now I’m hunting for the perfect chair.
Oh, love the poll! Great idea!

  3. I do the same. I save and preview and save and preview. I think it is a good idea because I will find a typo or I want to reword a sentence. I am probably anal about it.
